Field Hockey Returned To Briner Sports Complex Sunday Against No. 7 Louisville
March 07, 2021 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Cardinals have been looking forward to this day since the 2019 season to make their way back home to the Briner Sports Complex and today they did just that by hosting the No. 7 team in the country, Louisville.
Â
Unfortunately for Ball State (0-2) the outcome didn't go as planned this afternoon falling to UofL (1-0) by a score of 5-0.
"We played a fantastic tactical game against an elite team today," Ball State field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "I am so proud of our team's focus, passion, and execution. We matured in a big way, though the score doesn't necessarily reflect that. We tip our cap to Louisville as they capitalized on a few lapses. They are a squad who will make you pay for those. Overall though, this game was an incredible step forward for us going into MAC play. There really is something special in this Ball State field hockey team and there is no challenge that is too big for them."
Â
Although, it wasn't all that bad, Ball State's defense had some stellar moments throughout the 60-minute duration having a lot success in the first half alone. Ball State managed to hold its nationally ranked opponent to only two goals by intermission.
Â
Louisville's Mercedes Pastor proved to be just too much for Ball State to control today as she got a good look at the net 12 times, scoring three goals of UofL's five goals.
Â
Angel Nkosi led BSU with three promising shots at the net today but was unable to connect. Goalie Hannah Johnston registered seven saves while teammate Callie Rumbaugh also collected a defensive save in today's contest.
Â
The Ball State field hockey team will most definitely regroup this week during practice as the Cardinals prepare to open Mid-American Conference action this weekend beginning on Friday, March 12 at Appalachian State. The game is scheduled to begin at Noon in Boone, N.C.
