Field Hockey Opens Mid-American Conference Action At Appalachian State This Weekend
March 11, 2021 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team will open its highly anticipated Mid-American Conference season when it travels to Appalachian State this weekend for a double bill beginning Friday (March 12) and then will close action Saturday (March 13) with both games starting at Noon.
Â
The Cardinals enter league action with a 0-2 mark after falling to Miami (2-1) on March 2 which counted as a regular season contest and then dropping a 5-0 decision to No. 7 Louisville last Sunday afternoon at home in the Briner Sports Complex.
Â
Appalachian State has only one game so far under its belt and that was a 4-2 loss at Davidson on Feb. 27.
Â
Last year, the Cardinals closed out it MAC regular season play with a 1-0 victory over the Mountaineers in Muncie on Nov. 1, 2019. Former Cardinal Michelle Shampton scored the winning goal in the final minute to push Ball State past Appalachian State. Shampton's goal came off of the assist from current senior Jenna McKune.Â
Â
The series between the two programs dates back to 2006 with the Cardinals leading the all-time record, 6-3.  In 2018, Ball State defeated Appalachian State at their place in Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field in overtime by score of 1-0 after current redshirt senior Rachel Pereira's game-winner off of an OT penalty stroke. Â
Â
After this weekend, Ball State returns home to the Briner Sports Complex for six-straight home contests which begins with a two-game league series against the Ohio Bobcats (March 19-20) at 1 p.m. ET.
