Field Hockey Holds Down Longwood’s Offense For Shutout Win
March 27, 2021 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Cardinals looked to their veteran Rachel Pereira for today's victory over Longwood. Pereira's goal would be the lone score of the day after she found the back of the net in the third period to help lift Ball State past the Lancers Saturday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
It was definitely a defensive battle today, there was no doubt about that, as the Cardinals (3-5, 3-3 MAC) shutout its first opponent of the season registering a 1-0 win against the Lancers (3-3, 2-3 MAC).
Today's contest was an evenly played game through 45 minutes of action before the Cardinals took advantage of Longwood off of a corner late in the third.
After the whistle blew, newcomer Emma Hilton's pass connected with Pereira who took the quick shot and was able to connect. The goal was Pereira's second of the season and ninth of her career.
Ball State's 1-0 score line held through the remainder of the contest. The Cardinals had some close calls in the final 15 minutes of action but sophomore goalie Wietske Overdijkink was able to fend off the Lancers from scoring. Overdijkink continues to be one of the top goalies in league action. She collected four saves today and improved to 3-2 on the season.
The Ball State field hockey remains at home next weekend when it hosts Bellarmine in non-conference action beginning Friday, April 2 at 1 p.m. ET in the Briner Sports Complex. Please note that in the fall of 2021 Bellarmine will join the Mid-American Conference in field hockey.

"Thrilled with how the team responded after yesterday," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "We needed to make adjustments and find a way to connect better against a tough Longwood team. We got back to our aggressive mentality today and it paid big dividends. Huge for us to get a shutout— that is always a total team effort."
