Sunday Pitching Duel Goes To Old Dominion
March 14, 2021 | Baseball
NORFOLK, Va. - An old-fashioned Sunday pitching duel went Old Dominion's way Sunday, as the home team got a walk-off sac fly in the 10th inning to slip past Ball State 2-1. ODU took all three games of the series against BSU (6-7), which enters conference play next week having played one of the nation's toughest non-conference schedules.
Adam Tellier had his best game, going 4-for-4 and reaching base five times while driving in the team's only run with an RBI single in the 7th inning. That single scored Ryan Peltier and tied the game 1-1 as both teams sported superb pitching. Old Dominion (12-3) eventually pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the 10th on a sac fly.
CARDINALS PITCHING: Lukas Jaksich and Tyler Ruetschle were lights out for BSU, combining for 9.1 innings and allowing two runs on nine singles. The lefty-righty combo struck out 13 and walked two.
MONSTER SERIES FOR TELLIER: Adam Tellier started in the leadoff all three games of the series and Ball State had the leadoff man on base a lot. Tellier went 9-for-13 (.692) on the weekend, walked twice and stole three bases. He had a double and a triple and slugged .923 in the three games.Â
ALL SINGLES: In a true baseball oddity, Sunday's game featured 19 base hits - and all of them were singles. In the series, there were 58 hits and 44 of them were singles. Old Dominion hit three home runs in the series in the first two games.
EARLY SEGMENT COMPLETE: While there was no traditional spring break trip, BSU did get in 13 games against strong competition heading into league play. The Cardinals did reach Ball State has one non-conference series left, a three-game set vs. Butler April 1-3. With 11 teams in the MAC, there's always one team each weekend with no conference opponent.Â

UP NEXT: Conference play now begins for the Cardinals, who are at home each of the next two weekends. Western Michigan visits for four games March 19-21, followed with a home series vs. Toledo March 26-28.Â
