Men’s Tennis Suffers Tough Loss To Rival WMU In MAC Opener
March 12, 2021 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - When these two rivals collide, it is always going to be a battle and today's Mid-American Conference opener was no different between the Cardinals and the Broncos.
Even though Ball State (10-2, 0-1 MAC) took the early 1-0 lead over Western Michigan (12-1, 1-0 MAC) the decision of this match came down to singles and unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Broncos took five of the six courts from BSU for the 5-2 win at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
After falling to WMU at position two, Chris Adams and Danilo Kovacevic evened doubles play with a powerful victory on the top court. The score was 5-4 with Kovacevic serving for match point. The game was tied 30-30 but BSU won a long rally which was followed by a wide shot from the Broncos to give Adams and Kovacevic the 6-4 win over Fynn Lohse and Arjun Honnappa.
After that, the No. 3 BSU duo of Eli Herran and Bryce Bonin took down WMU's Peter Kuszynski and Joaquin Caballer by a 7-5 decision to clinch the first point of the match for Ball State.
WMU quickly took the 2-1 edge over BSU at the start of singles winning on courts two and three. Eli Herran knotted the match 2-2 after beating WMU's Honnappa at the No. 5 spot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. With the win, Herran remains undefeated in singles play improving his overall record to 9-0.
The Broncos took the remaining three matches even though courts one, four and six were all in three set thrillers. Those last three matches could have gone either way but today it just wasn't in the cards for the Cardinals.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action on Sunday at home against Northern Illinois. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and will be played at either the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center or indoors at the Northwest YMCA, weather permitting.
