Second Straight Win over Oakland Runs Women’s Tennis Win Streak to Six
February 24, 2021 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State women's tennis team defeated Oakland, 7-0, Tuesday to finish a sweep of two midweek matches with the Grizzlies.
The Cardinals, who had beaten the same team by a 6-1 score one day earlier, ran their winning streak to six and improved to 6-2 on the year. The Grizzlies, who opened their season with this week's matches, fell to 0-2.
Ball State did not drop a set at any position in singles or doubles and saw only one set even go to a tiebreaker.
"I am pleased with our overall effort and performance today," BSU head coach Max Norris said. "Everyone played a part today and yesterday, so it was a great few days. We are excited to get back to work and build on this."
Jessica Braun at No. 2 singles and Rebecca Herrington at No. 3 breezed to victories, dropping just seven games combined and finishing within minutes of each other. Their wins gave Ball State a 3-0 lead after the Cardinals had also taken the opening doubles point behind victories from the tandems of Emma Peeler and Amy Kaplan and Braun and Martina Bocchi.
Shortly thereafter, Mariya Polishchuk secured the match-clinching point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the top singles position.
The Cardinals also won at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots where Silvia Martinez and Emily Desai both grinded out tight second sets to finish off the straight-sets sweep.
Oakland, playing shorthanded with only five players, was forced to forfeit the final singles spot.
Ball State continues a six-match homestand Sunday, hosting Western Kentucky for a 1 p.m. start at Muncie's Northwest YMCA.
