Women’s Basketball Falls Short Against Buffalo, 83-76
February 20, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - It was the second time this week the Cardinals had faced the Bulls. BSU won its first meeting in Buffalo Wednesday 76-63, but unfortunately today, the Bulls returned the favor in Worthen Arena, taking home an 83-76 win back to Buffalo.
After the game, head coach Brady Sallee said that the biggest difference in the two contests were rebounds in the second half and he wasn't lying.
After intermission, Buffalo (12-7, 9-5 MAC) had out-rebounded Ball State (11-9, 9-7 MAC) 20-13. Sallee explained that in pivotal moments in the final stanza Buffalo got the rebounds it needed in crunch time and that put BSU in a tough spot to win the contest.
When looking at the final statistics you would have assumed this was a closely contested competition for the entire 40 minutes of action with 10 ties and five lead changes.
I mean, both teams ended the game with similar shooting percentages. Ball State did win the points in the paint battle, 50-36. But all-in-all it was definitely a battle to see which team would come out on top.
At the start of the contest, it had seemed that Ball State had carried its momentum from winning the first game this week over Buffalo into today's contest. BSU led by as many as 12 (41-29) late in the second quarter after junior forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir's layup with 55 seconds remaining.
Buffalo cut it back to nine (41-32) but junior forward Blake Smith ended the second quarter with a jump shot in the paint at the buzzer to give BSU the 43-32 edge over the Bulls at intermission.
The second half was a completely different story, this time it was the Bulls who would begin to dominate the ball game after opening the third frame with an 11-4 scoring spree to come within four (47-43) of the Cardinals at the media timeout.
As Ball State held onto dear life, redshirt sophomore Anna Clephane scored six-straight points for BSU which was capped off by a layup at the 5:02 mark to put the Cardinals back up by eight (53-45).
Buffalo's Dyaisha Fair and teammate Hanna Hall paired up on offense to take a 60-58 lead over Ball State as the third quarter was winding down.
Agustsdottir would come to the rescue with a layup at the buzzer to knot the game at 60 apiece heading into the final period.
Ball State never recovered in the fourth quarter despite its efforts. After some missed open shots and not being able to come up with a number of rebounds, it just wasn't going to end well for the Cardinals' today.
For the game, senior forward Oshlynn Brown led BSU with 25 points and 11 rebounds for her 45th career double-double while teammate Clephane finished the game with a 20-point performance. Agustsdottir rounded out the double digit scoring with 15 points.
The Ball State women's basketball team will play two games on the road next week starting with a trip to Northern Illinois on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ET tipoff in the Convocation Center. After that, BSU will head to Toledo Saturday, Feb. 27 for a noon start in Savage Arena.
