February 12, 2021 | Track & Field
ALLENDALE, Mich. - In its biggest meet leading up to the MAC Indoor Championships, the Ball State track & field team turned in a slew of standout performances Friday at the Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State in Michigan. None were bigger than freshman Elka Machan's run in the 5000m event, where she now owns the conference's best time.
"It was an all-around good day. Elka being the MAC leader as a freshman in awesome," head coach Brian Etelman said. "That was her 5K debut, she has tons of potential for growth by MAC. The sprint crew is rounding into championship form. I'm glad to see them competing the way they've been practicing."
Machan turned in a 17:05.81 mark over the 5K, now the MAC's best time by nearly 3 seconds over Miami's Katie Vitou. In Friday's event, Machan placed 12th of 73 runners, 11 seconds out of seventh place.
Two Cardinals - MaQuila Norman and Anasja Troutman - used Friday's meet to move into the MAC's top 3 in their respective events. Norman placed fourth with a 24.65 mark in the 200m, which ranks as the third-best mark in the MAC this season. Troutman clocked 8.76 in the 60m hurdle, which is also third in the conference. Troutman placed fourth of nine hurdlers on Friday.
