Ball State set to compete in first indoor meet of the season
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State track and field team is set to begin its 2021-22 season Friday afternoon at the Hoosier Open. Hosted by the Indiana University at Gladstein Field House in Bloomington, Ind., the field events begin at 3:45 p.m. ET, while the track events start at 4:30 p.m. ET.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity to put the spikes on and have these kids compete," Ball State head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "It's track and field season. It's that time of year where we put all the training from the fall and show what we've learned. Let's go out there, compete and show what we've got."
The Hoosier Open marks the first indoor meet for the Cardinals and the first for Wheatley in his first season in Muncie.
"How I'm going to define success and how we're going to look at success is were we competitive? I want to see us out there competing no matter what section we're in, what heat we're in or who we're running against. I want to see us be competitive. If we can do that, we can walk away feeling that we put the best product out there that we could that day."
The Cardinals have a healthy balance in terms of experience on its roster heading into the season with 12 upperclassmen, including eight who are seniors and graduates, in addition to 16 lowerclassmen, 11 of which who are freshmen.
"I'm really excited to watch everyone work together and see how everyone competes," sophomore Jennah Rogers said.
No stranger to battling at the collegiate level as the 2021 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Heptathlon champion and MAC Indoor Championship medalist in the pentathlon, senior Karlie Zumbro is ready to get the season underway.
"I feel ready to go. I've been anticipating the first meet for a really long time. I know fall is pretty grueling with training, but it's really exciting to get back on the track and I think everybody is anxious to compete."
Following a month break, Ball State's next indoor meet is slated for Jan. 14-15 at the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
