Strong Offensive Showing Moves WBB Past PFW, 86-58
December 02, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team led the entire 40 minutes of action due to an up-tempo offense and some fierce defense that set the tone as the Cardinals went on to defeat Purdue Fort Wayne, 86-58, Thursday night in Worthen Arena.
"It was a good win," Ball State head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee said. "It was a fun game up and down both teams were playing fast. I think you saw how balanced and how lethal we can be offensively. We shot the ball well from the 3-point line and we were able to get it to the rim from multiple people. I thought we ran our stuff relatively well and we took care of the ball."
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-2, while the Mastodons drop to 4-3 on the season. The Cardinals also remain undefeated in the all-time series against the Mastodons, improving to 7-0.
Ball State started the game off hot knocking down three 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the contest. Back-to-back treys from senior Thelma Dis Agustsdottir and then an additional one from redshirt junior Anna Clephane gave the Cardinals an early 9-3 edge over the Mastodons, all in the first two minutes of action. At the 3:35 mark, junior Estel Puiggros made the Cardinals' fourth 3-pointer of the first quarter to push Ball State's lead to 15-5.
But Purdue Fort Wayne didn't go away quietly, putting together a late first quarter 9-0 scoring spree that would bring the Mastodons to within one (15-14) of the Cardinals with 2:15 remaining in the first frame.
Freshman Marie Kiefer, who made her first start tonight for BSU, answered quickly with a layup to give Ball State back the offensive control. The Cardinals would head into the second quarter up 19-14 over the Mastodons.
Ball State got hot in the second quarter of action outscoring Purdue Fort Wayne 27-16 to take a 16-point (46-30) advantage over the Mastodons at intermission.
Agustsdottir kicked things off in the third period knocking down two more 3-point baskets to push Ball State's lead even further. Ball State maintained its up-tempo offense the remainder of the third quarter, eventually taking a 63-47 cushion into the final stanza.
The Cardinals defense forced the Mastodons to turn the ball over 28 times and Ball State managed to score 32 points off those miscues.
Ball State placed three in doubles figures tonight with Clephane leading all players with a 20-point performance. Agustsdottir ended the night with 18 points all of which came from behind the arc after shooting 67 percent (6-of-9) from the 3-point line. Junior Sydney Freeman would round out the double digit scoring with 16.
The Ball State women's basketball team remains home Saturday when it hosts ACC foe Pitt for a 1 p.m. ET tipoff in Worthen Arena.
