Former Cardinals to be in 60th class inducted into Hall of Fame
MUNCIE, Ind. – Former Ball State Cardinals Al Brown and Ray McCallum will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Board of Directors announced Tuesday.
Brown and McCallum are part of the organization's 60th class set to be formally honored on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
After serving as an assistant coach on Ball State's Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championship team during the 1980-81 season, Brown became the head coach of the Cardinals. He led the program from 1982-87 and amassed 68 wins, currently the eighth-most by a coach in program history.
Brown guided Ball State to a MAC Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 1986.
In addition to his duties with the Cardinals, Brown served in a coaching role at Michigan, Minnesota and Tennessee on the men's side and Duke, Michigan State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin on the women's side. He has been a part of teams winning three national championships as well as reaching eight NCAA Final Fours and 24 NCAA Tournaments. He holds the distinction as the only coach in college basketball history to coach in both the NCAA Division I men's and women's national championship games.
A four-year letterwinner from 1980-83, McCallum graduated as the all-time leading scorer in both Ball State and Mid-American Conference history. He led Ball State to its first-ever MAC championships in 1981 and 1982 and helped the Cardinals to the 1981 MAC Tournament championship and BSU's first-ever bid into the NCAA Tournament.
McCallum was named the recipient of the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Award as the nation's outstanding senior collegiate basketball player under 6-feet tall. He was the MAC's Most Valuable Player in 1983 after earning all-conference first-team honors three times and being named the league's Freshman of the Year in 1980.
His No. 10 jersey is one of three retired uniforms by the program.
McCallum returned to coach his alma mater in 1993 and led the Cardinals to three postseason appearances in seven seasons, including NCAA Tournament berths in 1995 and 2000. His 77 MAC wins are the most by any coach in program history.
McCallum was inducted into the MAC Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Ball State Hall of Fame in 1993.
