Women’s Basketball Takes Down In-State Rival Butler, 70-56
November 16, 2021 | Women's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS – The Ball State women's basketball team won the in-state rivalry game Tuesday night over Butler in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse by a score of 70-56.
It wasn't easy but the Cardinals (2-0) managed to take control in the second half to hand Butler (0-3) its third loss of the season.
Another well rounded scoring performance from a multitude of Cardinals with redshirt junior Anna Clephane leading the charge with a game-high 21 points. Chyna Latimer finished the night with 12 points. Defensively, freshman Ally Becki pulled down nine rebounds and added two blocks.
The first 20 minutes of action consisted of a multitude of turnovers from both squads. At the break, Butler had already committed 18 miscues to Ball State's 11. Despite the sloppiness, the Cardinals were able to control the lead the majority of the first half, resulting in a 27-17 advantage over Butler at intermission.
After the break, it had seemed as if the entire game would be a plethora of missed shots and mistakes. It finally changed late in the third frame when the Cardinals strung together an 8-0 run to take a 44-30 cushion over the Bulldogs with just 2:38 remaining in the third. During the run, Clephane scored five points and newcomer Marie Kiefer helped the cause by knocking down a 3-pointer.
The Cardinals would end up outscoring the Bulldogs 27-19 in the third frame and the Bulldogs were unable to recover the remainder of the contest.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues its four-game road swing when it travels to Katy, Texas for Thanksgiving break to compete in the Van Chancellor Classic. The first of three contests for the Cardinals will be played on Friday, Nov. 26 against Texas Tech at 5 p.m. ET.
