WBB Falls Short in Loss To Texas Tech At Van Chancellor Classic
November 26, 2021 | Women's Basketball
KATY, Texas - The Ball State women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season after falling by score of 71-67 to Big 12 powerhouse Texas Tech Friday evening in the Cardinals' first game of the Van Chancellor Classic at the Merrell Center.
With the loss, Ball State drops to 2-1 on the season, while Texas Tech remains undefeated with a 5-0 ledger.
Both teams started the game off slow in Texas but the Red Raiders would have the upper hand, taking a nine-point (35-26) lead over the Cardinals at intermission.
After the break, Ball State outscored Texas Tech 24-13 in the third frame and would have the 50-48 edge over the Red Raiders as both teams headed into the final frame of action.
Junior Sydney Freeman opened the fourth quarter with a 3-point basket to push the Cardinals' lead to 53-48 over Texas Tech at the 8:05 mark.
However, the Red Raiders continued to nip at the heels of Ball State to come within one point (55-54). Freeman would come to the rescue again with another basket from downtown to push BSU's lead back up to four, 58-54, with 3:44 remaining.
About a minute later, Ball State went on a scoring drought and Texas Tech would take back the lead, 62-60, with 1:37 left to play and would remain in control the rest of the way, despite the Cardinals' last efforts, which included a late 3-pointer from redshirt junior Anna Clephane.
For the second-straight contest, Clephane led Ball State in scoring with 15 points, while her teammates Freeman and junior Estel Puiggros weren't too far behind with 14-point performances each.
Defensively, Ball State was led by freshman Ally Becki with 10 rebounds.
The Ball State women's basketball team will look to bounce back Saturday against Stephen F. Austin in its second game of the Van Chancellor Classic. That game is slated for a 5 p.m. ET start inside the Merrell Center.
