High Academic Marks Again For Ball State Baseball
January 08, 2021 | Baseball
There are a few absolutes during a baseball season at Ball State: the Cardinals will win 30 or more games, and the team will thrive in the classroom. The Ball State baseball team, winner of 30+ games in 14 complete seasons under head coach Rich Maloney, celebrates a stellar fall semester.
For the fall 2020 semester, Ball State had 29 players record a 3.0 GPA or better. Sixteen of those 29 players had at least a 3.5 GPA. Three players - Chase Sebby, Justin Conant and Deckler Scheffler - earned a 4.0 GPA for the fall. Sebby is a graduate student and was a first team Academic All-American in 2020.
For the semester, the entire team compiled a 3.335 GPA.
"I'm proud of our team's accomplishments in the classroom this semester," Maloney said. "Three players with a 4.0 GPA and 29 with a 3.0 - amazing! It's a testament to the dedication our players have getting the job done in the classroom and on the field. I am very proud of them."
Nationally, Ball State is just one of only 12 programs to win the ABCA Academic Team Award every year since it was started in 2016. No other Mid-American Conference baseball program or team from another university in Indiana has accomplished this.
Maloney also complimented the work of the team's academic coordinator Ben Hatfield.
"Ben does a great job holding our guys accountable and to a high standard."
