WBB Suffers 89-55 Setback To BGSU In MAC Action Saturday
January 02, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team suffered an 89-55 loss to Bowling Green in Mid-American Conference action Saturday night in Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals (3-4, 1-2 MAC) opened Saturday's contest riding a three-game winning streak after closing the month of December with an impressive league win at Akron on Dec. 20.
Unfortunately, the Falcons (7-1, 3-0 MAC) halted BSU's momentum to remain undefeated in MAC action after already taking down fellow conference opponents Eastern Michigan and Miami. The win also snapped BGSU's 10-game losing streak to Ball State which dated back to the 2013-14 season.
The Cardinals' 29 turnovers, along with their offensive struggles especially from behind the arc 5-of-16 (31 percent), plagued Ball State in the setback. Bowling Green scored 38 points off of those turnovers and made 11-of-21 (52 percent) from 3-point range.
It was a close game in the opening 10 minutes of action. BGSU had a slight lead over Ball State but back-to-back baskets from senior Oshlynn Brown and newcomer Essence Booker knotted the game 8-8 with 3:17 on the clock.
But the tides changed quickly, as the Falcons put together an 11-0 run to close out the first frame action. BGSU took an impressive 19-8 lead into the second quarter over the Cardinals.
Booker opened the second quarter by hitting a deep two in hopes to rejuvenate the Cardinals, but Bowling Green was virtually unstoppable.
The Falcons' success strangely enough came from behind the arc. Bowling Green typically shoots 29 percent from the 3-point line, but in just the first half alone had shot 54 percent (7-of-13).
Ball State did manage to hold Bowling Green scoreless over the final three minutes of the first half, but the Falcons took a 16-point cushion (36-20) into the intermission.
After the half, Ball State turned up its defense and would try to chip away at the Falcons first-half lead. Unfortunately, the closest the Cardinals would get to Bowling Green was 13 early in the third.
Brown ended tonight's contest with the 35th double-double of her career after leading the Cardinals in scoring with 14 points and in rebounding with 12. Sophomore Sydney Freeman and Booker each ended the night with nine points apiece.
The Ball State women's basketball team remains at home in Mid-American Conference action when it hosts Toledo Wednesday in Worthen Arena at 7 p.m. ET.
