
Swimming Set To Host Bellarmine, Diving To Host UIndy Saturday

MUNCIE, Ind. - - After a strong start to the 2020-21 season back in November, the Ball State swimming & diving program will commence its winter run to the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, when it hosts Bellarmine in swimming and UIndy in diving.

Action for the Cardinals, who have been back on campus training for the last few weeks, begins in the pool at noon with the women battling the Knights who will be making their NCAA Division I debut in swimming.

At 1:30 p.m., the Ball State swimming & diving program will honor its seven seniors before the diving competition begins against the Greyhounds. BSU's men's team is scheduled to swim against Bellarmine starting at 2:30 p.m.

MEN'S EARLY SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
The men's program enters Saturday's meet with a 1-0 record after knocking off Eastern Illinois by a score of 151-109 on Nov. 6.
The Cardinals won seven of the 12 individual events, as well as the meet-opening 200 medley relay. The big winner of the day was freshman Joey Garberick who took home top billing in the 100 breaststroke (56.53), 200 breaststroke (2:09.49) and 200 IM (1:58.97). In fact, in his first collegiate meet the swimmer from Middlebury, Indiana, set a Lewellen Aquatic Center record in his first individual race; the 100 breaststroke.

Overall, five different Cardinals have at least one individual event win for the Ball State men's program this season.

The women's program enters Saturday's meet with a 2-0 record, scoring wins over Eastern Illinois (165-92) on Nov. 6 and MAC-rival Bowling Green (172-127) on Nov. 7.

The Cardinals opened the season with 13 event wins over EIU and added nine more in the victory over the Falcons. It was Ball State's first dual win over the Falcons since the 2012-13 campaign.

For her role in the two wins, sophomore Apsara Sakbun was named the MAC Women's Swimmer of the Week. She led the Cardinals with four individual victories and was a member of two first-place relays.

In the win over the Panthers, Sakbun swam anchor for the first-place 200 medley relay (1:45.35) and picked up individual wins in the 50 freestyle (24.17) and 200 backstroke (2:07.08). Against the Falcons, she once again swam anchor for the winning 200 medley relay (1:46.36) and took top billing in the 50 (24.15) and 100 (52.76) freestyle events
