Plitt Named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List
August 13, 2020 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State's Drew Plitt has found his name on another list of the top quarterbacks in the college game.
Â
Plitt, a redshirt senior from Loveland, Ohio, was named this week to the watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The honor is presented annually to the top senior and upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with his class. Candidates are chosen based on player performance on and off the field.
Â
Just two weeks ago, Plitt was named to the watch list for the Manning Award, honoring the nation's top quarterback.
Â
Plitt directed the MAC's top offense last season in terms of both scoring (34.8 points per game) and total offense (463.0 yards per game). He led the league with 24 touchdown passes and ranked second with 234.2 passing yards per game.
Â
The MAC has postponed all scheduled fall contests in 2020, as well as MAC championships, due to continuing concerns related to the COVID-19 global pandemic. In consultation with the MAC, Ball State will explore potential opportunities for the 2021 Spring semester.
Â
Plitt is one of two MAC quarterbacks on the Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list, joining Kent State's Dustin Crum. Last year's recipient was LSU's Joe Burrow.
Â
The namesake of the award has a storied history. Johnny Unitas was an 18-year veteran of the NFL, who played his collegiate career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.
Â
The award is presented annually by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee.
