
Softball Places Pair on CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State softball senior outfielder Haley Dominique and junior catcher Stacy Payton were named to the 2020 Academic All-District Softball Team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. First team honorees from all eight districts now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. Ball State is in District 5 which includes schools from the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

Dominique recently completed her undergraduate degree in business administration and held a 3.73 grade point average entering the 2020 spring semester. She played in 26 of the team's 27 games this season, helping the Cardinals compile a Mid-American Conference leading 18-9 overall record. She finished the season ranked second on the squad with 21 runs scored, while producing a .309 batting average. She also tallied five doubles and a home run, while driving in 16 RBIs.

A four-year starter for the Cardinals, Dominique ranks among the program greats in nearly every offensive category. She is fifth in career on base percentage (.440), sixth in doubles (43), ninth in runs scored (126), 12th in RBIs (100), 14th in batting average (.324), 18th in slugging percentage (.484) and 18th in home runs (12). A 2018 First Team All-MAC selection, Dominique has played in 183 of a possible 195 games over her career, earning 174 starts. She will get the chance to add to those numbers next season, as she will be returning to the squad for the 2021 campaign.

Payton, a biology major with a 3.83 grade point average, had a monster season for the Cardinals in 2020, leading the MAC and ranking among the national leaders in nearly every offensive statistical category. A starter in all 27 games for Ball State, she led all league players in hits (36), doubles (13), home runs (8), RBI (35), total bases (75) and slugging percentage (.833). In fact, her 13 doubles were second among all NCAA Division I players, while her 35 RBI were fifth, her 36 hits were 17th and her eight home runs were 26th.

Over her career, Payton has played in 136 of a possible 137 games and finds herself entering her senior campaign ranked seventh in program history with a .568 career slugging percentage. She is also 10th in career home runs (20), 12th in on base percentage (.408), 12th in doubles (33) and 14th in RBIs (99). A 2019 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region Third Team selection, Payton was also a 2019 First Team All-MAC honoree.
