MUNCIE, Ind. - Stephanie Bernthal, entering her third season as Ball State's head coach, announced Tuesday the commitment of transfer Kerrianne McClay (Green Village, N.J./Madison High School) to the Cardinals' 2020 fall roster.
McClay joins fellow 2020 signees Halle Baisas (Louisville, Ky.), Rachel Bohn (Harrisburg, Pa.), Maureen Donegan (New City, N.Y.), Michaela Graney (Cape Town, South Africa), Emma Hilton (Clark, N.J.), Elyse Horner (Oconomowoc, Wis.), Hannah Johnston (Falls Church, Va.) and Callie Srader (Richmond, Va.).
"Kerri is a very talented player that we are very fortunate to have a second opportunity to bring into our family," Bernthal said. "This truly is a situation that we hadn't foreseen and feels like fate for us all. We have always loved Kerri's tenacity, grit, and love for the game. She is as tough as they come and fights wholeheartedly for her team. These are qualities that make her a natural fit with our team's culture. Her freshman year of college speaks for itself, and we look forward to her bringing that experience, and her super fun personality, to our squad."
Prior to Ball State, McClay spent a year at the University of Delaware where she was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie Team. She played in 20 games with 16 starts. She scored one goal, had 12 shots, six shots on goal, while registering four assists as a defender for the Blue Hens.
McClay had a stellar high school career and was a three-year varsity letter-winner at Madison High School. McClay is a versatile player who primarily competes at the midfield and back positions. As a senior, she represented the Dodgers as their team captain and finished her career with 64 goals and 40 assists. McClay received a multitude of accolades throughout her storied career. At the conclusion of her senior season, she was named the 2018 NJ.com NJAC Player of the Year. She was selected to the 2018 NJFHCA Senior All-Star Team and earned MAX Field Hockey First Team All-Region. McClay received Second Team All-State honors in 2018 and 2016 while being tabbed Third Team All-State in 2017. She was a three-time First Team All-North Jersey and All-Conference honoree. McClay was a four-sport athlete at Madison High School, earning letters in track, basketball and lacrosse in addition to field hockey.
She also found success in club competition playing for New Heights and was a member of USA Field Hockey futures program. McClay was selected three consecutive years to compete in the National Futures Championship (2017-2019). In 2017, she was selected to compete in the U16 AAU Junior Olympics where her team won the gold medal. In 2018, McClay was selected at the completion of the tournament to play in the U19 Future Stars and Stripes match, a funnel to the US national team.
The Cardinals are excited to welcome Kerrianne McClay and are eager to return to campus for the 2020 season.
