Ball State plays at home Tuesday afternoon
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Ball State put an exclamation point on its nine-game spring break trip with an 8-1 win over Longwood on Sunday. The Cardinals also finished the Charleston swing of the trip with a 3-1 record and will play at home Tuesday afternoon.Â
Noah Navarro hit a solo home run and five other Cardinals provided a flurry of doubles as Ball State broke open a close game with all eight runs coming over a four-inning span. Freshman Mac Ayres did good work in his first start, pitching 4.0 innings without allowing an earned run.
"Our boys finished strong going 3-1 to win the Swig & Swine Classic. Our pitching was strong all weekend," head coach Rich Maloney said. "We are looking forward to playing at our ballpark at First Merchants Complex."
BIG INNINGS
BSU held a 2-1 lead when it struck for three runs in the top of the 6th to break the game open. Ross Messina hit an RBI double and Nick Powell scored him with a single to make the game 4-1. Devin Porter added an RBI single moments later to give BSU a 5-1 lead.Â
Navarro's homer came on a 0-0 pitch in the 7th and then Cade Fitzpatrick and Nick Powell followed with run-scoring hits. Trenton Quartermaine scored in each big inning and finished the day 2-for-5 with a double.
LOCKDOWN PITCHING
Sunday's win was another strong pitching performance for the Cardinals. After Kyle Nicolas (17 strikeouts) and Chayce McDermott (6 no-hit innings) dominated their starts, Ayres turned in a good performance against Longwood. He allowed just an unearned run over 4.0 efficient innings and left the game with the lead. Sloan Thomsen came in for three shutout innings and retired nine of the 13 batters he faced. Zach Losey threw the 8th inning and Quartermaine took the mound to finish the game.
For the four games in Charleston, Ball State posted a 1.46 ERA with 59 strikeouts over 37 innings.
CLUTCH PITCHING EARLY IN THE GAME
Thomsen entered the 5th inning with two on and nobody out and kept Longwood from scoring. He got the first two batters before a single loaded the bases. Thomsen got a strikeout on a 3-2 pitch to end the threat and the Ball State hitters took it from there.Â
