Softball Closes Spring Break with 2-0 Win over Samford
March 08, 2020 | Softball
MIAMI, Fla. - - Freshman pitcher Deborah Jones turned in another outstanding performance to help the Ball State softball team close spring break with a 2-0 win over Samford Sunday morning at FIU's Felsberg Field.
In picking up her second complete game shutout of the season, Jones helped the Cardinals (18-9) avenge Saturday's loss to the Bulldogs (9-14) by limiting them to just two hits over her seven innings of work. She also struck out six batters in the game, including the first and last batters she faced.
On offense, junior left fielder Katie Janiga provided all the run support Jones would need with an RBI single to left-center field in the bottom of the second inning. Senior second baseman Gabby Magnifico scored on the hit after reaching base on a fielder's choice.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore pinch runner Becca Clanton scored on a Samford throwing error. Clanton came in to run for junior catcher Delanie Johnson who doubled down the left field line with one out.
Ball State finished the game with four hits, with two coming off the bat of Janiga. BSU's final hit was a leadoff triple from junior first baseman Stacy Payton in the seventh.
With the win, the Cardinals closed its 12-game spring break trip with an 8-4 record.
The Ball State softball team returns to action Saturday (March 14), when it travels to No. 11 / No. 16 Michigan for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The Cardinals and Wolverines will also play a single game Sunday (March 15) at 1 p.m.
