Messina's Clutch Single Gives BSU Extra-Innings Win
March 07, 2020 | Baseball
CHARLESTON, S.C. - In four days, the Ball State baseball team has played three one-run games. This time, it was the Cardinals doing the walking off.
Ross Messina shot a single to center field in the bottom of the 10th to score Noah Navarro to give Ball State a 2-1 win over Richmond.
Tyler Schweitzer earned the win, his second of the season. Navarro went 3-for-5 with a double and Messina added a triple earlier in the game. Trenton Quartermaine, now batting .366 on the young season, had two hits and an RBI.
"Our pitching was outstanding and our guys battled through some adversity to win in extra innings," head coach Rich Maloney said. "We showed grit in earning this victory."
ANOTHER DOMINANT PITCHING START
On Friday night, it was Kyle Nicolas with 17 strikeouts over seven innings. Chayce McDermott took his turn Saturday, throwing 6.0 no-hit innings with 11 strikeouts. McDermott's first seven outs were all punchouts as he worked out of trouble in the 1st and then cruised. He struck out the last two batters he faced in the 6th before coming out after throwing 104 pitches. As a team, Ball State exterminated 20 Richmond Spiders by strikeout, a season high and the team's highest K mark since last March (20 vs. Kent State in 13 innings).
CLUTCH WINS
The 2-1, extra-innings win over Richmond represented BSU's third extra-innings victory of the season. Ball State collected two wins in extras at Houston Baptist two weeks ago.
CARDIAC CARDINALS
Saturday's walk-off win was the third one-run game in four days for Ball State. On Wednesday, the Gardner-Webb hit a homer in the 9th to escape the Cardinals 4-3. On Friday night, Sacred Heart overcame the dominant outing from Nicolas to edge the Cards 1-0.

In five games this calendar week, Navarro is hitting .556 and has scored six runs and walked twice. Nick Powell has three doubles this week and Chase Sebby is hitting .300 while scoring four runs. Dating back to last Sunday, McDermott has 17 strikeouts over 11 innings while allowing just three runs on five hits.Â
