LEADERBOARD
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Ball State golfer Tyler Green opened the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate with his career-best score in relation to par, a 4-under 68, to spring into contention.
Green, competing this week as an individual, followed it up with an even-par afternoon round to cap a 36-hole day in fifth place out of the 72 golfers in the field. His 10 birdies on the day were the second-most of anyone competing.
Round two was suspended by darkness with a handful of groups still on the course. Among Ball State players, only Joey Ranieri still has a hole to play. The second round will be completed Sunday morning prior to the final round.
Jack Cunningham paced the BSU lineup on day one with rounds of 72 and 75 to find himself in a tie for 16th place. Keegan Bronnenberg (74-77) also turned in a counting score in both rounds, while Ranieri provided a 74 in the morning and still must complete his second round.
Ball State was in eighth place after a 295 (+7) to open the day but dropped a couple spots to 10th by the time play was halted. Scores were significantly higher in the afternoon for teams across the board.
No. 10 Vanderbilt, the highest-rated of the 10 top-100 teams in the field, leads the way at 17 under par. The Commodores hold a 12-shot lead over SEC rival Mississippi State.
Green has now posted scores of 68 in two of his past four competitive stroke play rounds. He shot a 3-under 68 during the fall finale at the Musketeer Classic. He is seven shots off the Desert Mountain lead held by Vanderbilt's John Augenstein, the nation's No. 4 player, but only three shots out of second place.
Play will resume Sunday at 7:50 a.m. MT (9:50 ET) on the Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain Golf Club.
