Women’s Basketball Late Comeback Falls Short At Northern Illinois
March 04, 2020 | Women's Basketball
DEKALB, Ill. - Typically the Cardinals have been the comeback kids all season, prevailing in some tight situations in the final 10 minutes of action, but unfortunately today the win went the other way as Ball State (20-9, 12-5 MAC) fell 70-62 to Northern Illinois (10-18, 6-11 MAC) Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
Junior Oshlynn Brown had her fourth-straight double-double and 15th of the season after a 20-point, 13 rebound performance. Graduate senior Jasmin Samz also scored in double digits for Ball State with 12 points and became the 29th member of the program's 1,000th point club.
Sophomore Thelma Dis Agustsdottir started the game off for the Cardinals by nailing a 3-pointer after BSU won the opening tip. After that, both teams traded baskets over the duration of the first 10 minutes of play. The remainder of the first half was much of the same, Ball State would lead 20-17 at the end of the first quarter but the Huskies took the 33-32 advantage over Cardinals at intermission. Ball State's bread and butter, in the paint points, were down at the half over NIU, 20-14.
Things began to unravel for the Cardinals after halftime, the Huskies came out hot putting together a 10-4 run to take a 43-36 advantage just under the five-minute mark of the third quarter. Samz then knocked down a crucial 3-pointer prior to the media timeout to give the Cardinals back some life, making it a one possession game, 43-41. But NIU couldn't be stopped, closing out the third frame with an 11-3 scoring spree, heading into the final 10 minutes of action up by eight (54-46). Defensively, the Huskies turned the tables defensively on Ball State, holding the Cardinals to just two field goals in the third period.
The Cardinals struggled to get a shot off despite having some good looks at the start of the final stanza. A layup from Samz at the 6:20 mark made her the 29th member of Ball State's 1,000 point club. She had 991 career Ball State points heading into tonight's contest. After that, sophomore Blake Smith also had a nice move to the basket to make it just a seven-point game with 4:51 on the clock. But even though it seemed like Huskies had the game locked up, Ball State began to make its comeback. With 3:47 left, back-to-back layups from Brown brought the Cardinals back to within five (60-55). Ball State came to within four points of Northern Illinois twice as time was expiring but unfortunately, this time, NIU would close out the game with the victory.
The Ball State women's basketball team will wrap up its regular season action when it travels to Western Michigan Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off in Read Fieldhouse. The Cardinals already have secured a first-round bye to next week's 2020 Mid-American Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed.
