Cardinals Cruise In Home Opener
March 10, 2020 | Baseball
Ball State broke open a close game in the late innings to win its home opener 9-4 over Fort Wayne on Tuesday. Noah Navarro continued his recent tear with a 4-for-5 day that included a triple, three runs and two stolen bases.
Tyler Ruetschle pitched two innings to earn his first career win and Tyler Schweitzer got the last six outs for the save. Ty Weatherly worked the first 4.0 innings and allowed two runs while striking out five. All of the Tylers together struck out 13 and worked with a bend-but-don't-break philosophy.Â

CARDINALS PULL AWAY
Purdue Fort Wayne actually led this game 2-1 in the 5th inning before the Cardinals got to the visiting bullpen. Trenton Quartermaine scored Zach Cole with a groundout to tie the game in the 5th and the BSU went for four runs in the 6th. Ryan Peltier lifted a towering two-run homer on an 0-2 pitch to give the Cards the lead and later Chase Sebby hit a two-run double to make it 6-2. Sebby would finish the game with three RBIs.
Aaron Simpson added a sac fly in the 7th and then RBI singles by Navarro and Quartermaine in the 8th put the game away. In total, the Cardinals scored eight runs over innings 5-8.
NAVARRO CAUSING OPPONENTS SORROW
Navarro has 13 hits and seven runs over his last five games, a stretch where Ball State has gone 4-1. He's moved into the leadoff spot and is hitting .377 and getting on base at a .441 clip. He owns six extra-base hits and is 7-for-7 in stolen bases.
ALWAYS WINNING IN MUNCIE
BSU led the nation with a 23-1 record on its home field last season. With the win in the home opener added to that, the Cardinals are 31-3 in their last 33 home games dating back to 2018. In 14+ seasons under Maloney, the Cardinals have won nearly 74 percent of their home games.
