Softball Blasts Its Way Past Prairie View A&M in Saturday Action
February 08, 2020 | Softball
Â
Overall, the Cardinals (1-3) pounded out a season-high 17 hits and tallied a season-best 16 runs in picking up their first win of the young season.
Â
In addition to Daniel's blast to open the game, senior designated player Janae Hogg tagged her first of the season, and the 30th of her career, to drive in a pair of runs in the second inning.
Â
Junior right fielder Kendall Fields led the team with four RBIs, including a two-run triple in the second. However, the hottest bat of the contest went to senior Haley Dominique who finished the game 5-for-6, with five runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
Â
In the circle, sophomore Tieghan Morio was credited with the win after limiting the Panthers (1-3) to one run and one hit over 3.1 innings of work. She also struck out five batters over two different trips to the mound.
Â
Freshman Deborah Jones also turned in an impressive pitching performance, striking out all six batters she faced over the final two innings.
Â
In Saturday's second game, Dominique recorded a first inning single to give herself a sixth hit on the afternoon. Unfortunately, it was Ball State's only hit of the contest as the Cardinals suffered an 8-0 (6) loss to the day's host McNeese, who finished the evening with an unblemished 4-0 record after also topping PVAMU in the nightcap.
Â
SATURDAY NOTES:
- Saturday's five-hit game versus Prairie View A&M was the first five-hit game of senior Haley Dominique's career … Her previous best was a four-hit effort at Akron on March 31, 2018.
Â
- Haley Dominique's five runs scored versus Prairie View A&M were also a career-best, with her previous best being four in the same game as above versus Akron her sophomore season.
Â
- Ball State's 16 total runs Saturday versus the Panthers were the most in a game since, you guessed it, the team earned a 16-5 (5) win over Akron on March 31, 2018 … The last time Ball State scored more than 16 runs in a game was a 17-2 (5) win over Drake on Feb. 17, 2017.
Â
- Ball State's 17 total hits versus Prairie View A&M were the most since the squad put up 19 in a 15-0 (5) win over St. Bonaventure on March 17, 2018.
Â
- Kendall Fields' two-run triple in the top of the second was the first triple of her collegiate career.
- Eight of Ball State's nine starters recorded at least one hit in Saturday's win over PVAMU, while sophomore pinch-hitter/right fielder Faith Hensley notched a two-run single to give the Cardinals nine players with at least one hit.
