Softball Tops Drexel, 3-1, Extends Winning Streak to 10 Games
February 29, 2020 | Softball
ORLANDO, Fla. - - Senior pitcher Alyssa Rothwell matched her season high with nine strikeouts, including the final three batters of the game, to guide the Ball State softball team to a 3-1 victory over Drexel in its first of two Saturday games at the UCF Invitational.
Â
With the win, the Cardinals (13-5) extended their current winning streak to 10 games. It is the program's longest winning streak since an 11-game run in 2010 which started with a 17-5 (5) victory over Bowling Green (April 13, 2010) and ended with a 4-0 win against Ohio (May 9, 2010).
Â
After a scoreless first two innings, the Cardinals struck first in the top of the third as sophomore shortstop Amaia Daniel singled to right center with one out and junior second baseman Stacy Payton drove an RBI double to right.
Â
The Dragons (0-2) countered with a tying run in the bottom of the fifth, and looked poised to score more with one out and bases loaded. However, Rothwell countered with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and keep the game tied.
Â
Ball State threatened to reclaim the lead in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. Unfortunately, a strikeout from the Drexel pitcher kept the game tied.
Â
The game would not stay tied after the top of the seventh, however, as senior Janae Hogg deposited her sixth home run of the season over the high fence in center field to drive in a pair of runs and push the Cardinals ahead 3-1. Senior right fielder Gabby Magnifico scored on the play after doubling to right center one batter earlier.
Â
The Dragons would try to counter with back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the seventh. However, Rothwell was able to get the next batter swinging for the first out. She would then get the next two batters looking to end the game.
Â
In addition to her nine strikeouts, Rothwell limited the Dragons to three hits and one unearned run to earn her second complete game win of the season.
Â
SATURDAY MORNING NOTES:
- With her double and two walks in the win over Drexel, Magnifico has now reached base safely in each of the last 14 games … During the streak, she is batting .419 with six doubles and three home runs … She also has 13 RBI and 13 runs scored over the last 14 games.
