Bader’s 100 Breast Finals Appearance Leads BSU’s Day-Three Efforts

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore Alex Bader made Ball State swimming's first appearance in an A Final at the 2020 Mid-American Conference Championships Friday when she finished eighth in preliminaries to qualify for the championship round.
Bader went on Friday night to clock in at 1:02.69 in the finals and finish fifth in the event overall. The sophomore's performance secured 14 points for BSU.
The Cardinals provided several other swimmers who qualified for and competed in B Finals on the day. Freshman Sydney Dygert placed 15th in preliminaries in the 100 Fly (55.79) and recorded the seventh-best time in school history. She would later finish seventh in the finals (56.73), improving upon her time from earlier in the morning.
In the 100 Back both Shelby Crist and Anne Vormohr earned B Final appearances with respective 11th and 16th place preliminary swims. Crist would go on to take fourth in the evening session (55.86) while Vormohr claimed seventh (56.25). Alexa McDonald and Abbie McCarter finished right next to each other in the B Finals of the 100 Breast with McDonald claiming fourth (1:03.20) and McCarter fifth (1:03.44). McDonald's time was good for fourth in school history while McCarter's time was a lifetime best and moved her to sixth in program history.
As for the dive squad, both Caitlin Locante and freshman Madison Gatzlaff qualified for the B Finals on the 3-Meter Friday night. Locante scored a 247.29 to finish fourth while Gatzlaff wasn't far behind in sixth with a total of 232.05. Locante finished 12th in prelims and Gatzlaff 15th.
The night closed with the 400 Medley Relay in which Ball State finished eighth. Crist, Bader, Phoebe Rensink and Apsara Sakbun recorded a time of 3:45.02, the fourth-fastest in school history, to win 22 points.
Ball State finds itself in eighth place after three days of swimming and diving with a total of 171 team points. Akron continues to lead the standings with 524 points. Full standings are listed below.
