Jones' Gem Leads Softball to Valentine’s Day Win at Jacksonville
February 15, 2020 | Softball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - - Freshman pitcher Deborah Jones shined under the lights Friday night, striking out a career-high 10 batters to lead the Ball State softball team to a 10-1 victory in the second game of the team's Valentine's Day doubleheader at Jacksonville.
The Cardinals (3-4) avenged the day's opening 2-1 setback to the host Dolphins (4-3) by also pounding out 13 hits in the nightcap, including a pair of doubles and a home run from junior catcher Stacy Payton.
Back in the circle, Jones limited Jacksonville to just five hits and one earned run over her 7.0 innings of work. Her 10 strikeouts are also the most for a Ball State pitcher so far this season.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals got on the board first in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single to right field from senior outfielder Haley Dominique. Payton and junior outfielder Kendall Fields opened the third inning with back-to-back doubles, to produce the second run of the game, while an error gave BSU a 3-0 edge.
Payton doubled in Ball State's fourth run in the top of the fourth, and after JU scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore shortstop Hailey Demnianiuk's responded with a single to left in the fifth to produce her first hit and RBI of the young year.
Following a scoreless sixth inning, the Cardinals exploded for five more runs in the seventh to give the game it's final score of 10-1. Two of the runs came off Payton's third home run of the season.
All said, seven different Ball State players recorded at least one hit in Friday's nightcap, including two each from Demnianiuk, senior outfielder Gabby Magnifico and freshman third baseman Haley Wynn.
In Friday's opener, the Cardinals were able to out-hit the Dolphins by a six-to-five margin, but suffered their third one-run loss of the year. Magnifico was 2-for-2 in the contest, with her first two hits of the year, while Dominique went 2-for-3.
Payton drove in BSU's lone run with an RBI double up the middle in the top of the first, following a leadoff single from Dominique.
Senior Alyssa Rothwell suffered the loss in the circle despite limiting JU to five hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, over 6.0 innings of work. She also struck out seven batters to raise her season total to 24.
