Softball Slugs Past North Florida in Saturday Nightcap
February 15, 2020 | Softball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - - Led by three hits apiece from sophomore shortstop Amaia Daniel and senior first baseman Janae Hogg, the Ball State softball team closed Saturday's doubleheader at North Florida with a commanding 10-1 (6) victory at the UNF Softball Complex.
In all, the Cardinals (4-5) pounded out a season-high 18 hits to avenge a 7-2 loss to the Ospreys (4-5) in the first game of Saturday's twin bill.
Ball State's bats actually got going at the tail end of Saturday's opening-game loss, as the visitors from Muncie struck for three of its six hits in the final inning. With the Cardinals trailing 7-0, Hogg opened the seventh with her first of four hits in the next five at bats, a double down the left field line.
With junior pinch runner Katie Janiga at second, junior Kendall Fields blasted her second home run of the season to cut the Ospreys' lead to five runs. The Cardinals looked to continue the rally with a double from junior catcher Delanie Johnson, only to see three straight outs end the game.
Ball State's bats would stay hot, however, as Daniel opened the nightcap with a double down the left field line and scored three batters later on an infield single from senior second baseman Gabby Magnifico. Fields and Hogg then followed with back-to-back singles to make it a 2-0 game.
Ball State added two more runs in the top of the second, starting with a double by senior center fielder Kennedy Wynn. Freshman third baseman Haley Wynn followed by surprising a pulled-in UNF defense with an RBI triple to the center field wall. Daniel made it three straight hits with an infield single to short, plating H. Wynn.
After North Florida scored an unearned run in the fourth, the Cardinals countered with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to give the game it's final score.
In the fifth, Hogg singled to open the inning. With Janiga in again to pinch run at first, Johnson followed with a single through the left side and advanced to second on the throw when Janiga sped from first to third. K. Wynn followed with a soft roller down the first base line, bringing home Janiga for the first run of the inning. With the bases loaded four batters later, senior left fielder Haley Dominique blasted a two-run single up the middle, making the score 7-1.
The sixth saw Fields single and Hogg pick up her second double of the day to put runners at second and third with no outs. After Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and a fielder's choice by K. Wynn forced the out at home, sophomore pinch hitter Trinity Eckerty cleared the base runners with a three-run double to left field.
That was plenty of run support for freshman pitcher Deborah Jones who picked up her second consecutive complete shutout by limiting the Ospreys to just one hit and one unearned run over 6.0 innings of work. She retired UNF in order in five of her six innings of work, and finished the night with two strikeouts, both in the sixth.
