Track & Field Building Momentum Heading Into Music City Challenge

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Coming off another strong weekend which saw the team tally 16 top 10 performances and 12 career-best efforts, the Ball State indoor track & field program looks to keep the momentum going at this weekend's Music City Challenge (Feb. 14-15) hosted by Vanderbilt.

The Cardinals are currently scheduled to compete in 14 different events over the action-packed, two-day meet which will be held at the Vanderbilt Rec Center / Indoor Track Facility.
Â
Friday has Ball State entered in six events, starting at 5 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. CT with the high jump and weight throw. BSU will close the opening day of competition with the second section of the 5,000m at 9:45 p.m. ET / 8:45 p.m. CT.

Action resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. ET / 10 a.m. CT with the 3,000m and comes to a close with the 4x400m relay at 5:55 p.m. ET / 4:55 p.m. CT.

The Music City Challenge is the Cardinals' fifth meet of the season, it is the second to last competition before the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships (Feb. 28-29) hosted by Akron. Ball State closes its run to the MAC Indoor Championships next Friday with its only indoor home meet this season; the Ball State Tune-Up (Feb. 21).

After posting a time of 55.43 in the 400m at the Akron Invitational (Feb. 7), senior Amber Jones became the second Ball State track & field student-athlete to hit a Mid-American automatic qualifying mark this season.

Bryeana Byrdsong was the first, sprinting to a time of 7.58 in the 60m at the Gene Edmonds Memorial Invite (Jan. 10).

CARDINALS IN THE NCAA RANKINGS:
In addition to ranking fifth among MAC runners, senior Maritza Rodriguez's effort of 17:16.61 in the 5,000m at the Gladstein Invitational (Jan. 24) is one of the fastest in the nation, coming in at 90th.

She climbed past junior Princess Carter who won the weight throw with a career-best toss of 17.83m (58'-6") at the season-opening Mastodon Opener (Dec. 7). That effort is currently fifth in program history.

Senior Kelsey Walters' shot put effort of 14.49m (47'-6.5") at the Gladstein Invitational (Jan. 25) keeps her second all-time in the Ball State's record book, as it was 0.12m further than her previous career-best mark of 14.37m (47-1.75) which held the same spot.

At last weekend's Akron Invitational (Feb. 8), senior Maritza Rodriguez moved from fifth to third in the 3,000m with a run of 9:48.17. In addition, senior Amber Jones broke into the top five in the 400m with the fifth-best individual time in program history at 55.43.
