Cardinals Split Two Tiebreaker Matches on Day 1 in Florida

DADE CITY, Fla. -- It all came down to tiebreakers for the Ball State men's golf team on the opening day of the ninth annual Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play.

Both of the Cardinals' matches ended up deadlocked, 3-3. Then it was all about whose wins were bigger. DePaul had larger margins of victory in the morning, sending Ball State into the consolation bracket where BSU edged Loyola on the same tiebreaker in the afternoon.

Ball State's top two players in the lineup, Keegan Bronnenberg and Joey Ranieri, won both of their matches on the day. Neither of them saw a match reach the final hole. But Yianni Kostouros was the only other Cardinal to earn a full point, blitzing Loyola's Tyler Anderson, 7&6, in the afternoon for the largest margin of victory by any player on day one.

It was not a good day to be a top seed at Lake Jovita. Ball State entered as the No. 1 seed and Bowling Green the No. 2. Neither team won its opening match. Instead they will meet in Tuesday's fifth-place match.

Seventh-seeded Drake pulled off two upsets on the day, convincingly knocking off Bowling Green in the morning and No. 3 seed Dayton in the afternoon. The Bulldogs will square off with No. 4 seed Eastern Michigan in Tuesday's championship match.

The final round begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. with live scoring available at golfstat.com.
