Gainbridge Delivers Second Round of Professional Development Series to Ball State Athletes
October 27, 2020 | General
MUNCIE, IN – Gainbridge, a digital annuity management platform and member of the Indiana-based Group1001 family of insurance companies, expanded its innovative approach to helping the Ball State University student-athlete population during this COVID-19 crisis. After a successful first round of online opportunities in the absence of athletics during Summer 2020, more were offered this Fall as universities nationwide navigated various mixtures of in-person and distance learning. A third round is expected to begin in second semester.
Gainbridge, known for its cutting-edge digital annuities platform, offered virtual professional development workshops, the Ball State Leadership Series, for Ball State student-athletes. Topics included Financial Advising for Students, Professional Communication, How to Nail Interviews, Building Confidence, and Ergonomics. This second round of webinar workshops, which began September 8 and ended October 6, were designed for student-athletes across a range of sports and were led by former student and professional athletes as well.
The professional development series is the first of its kind between Gainbridge, Ball State and professional athlete coaching firm, Elites Optimization Services (EOS). Cheryl Lala, EOS Director of Training and Career Coaching, returned to lead this second round of workshops after seeing the impact of the first.
"The first five webinars in our partnership with Ball State University tackled common business tools such as resume creation, elevator pitch and networking. This time, our focus is on deeper relationship building and knowledge implementation," said Lala, former UC Berkeley alumna and professional golfer, "We want Ball State student-athletes to leave each session more confident and better equipped to link their experience as an athlete to all arenas of their lives."
Lala and EOS brought two other female athlete leaders to this round of teaching: three-time Olympic medalist-turned-financial advisor Lauryn Williams and reigning U.S. champion javelin thrower/ergonomics business owner Ariana Ince spoke on their areas of expertise.
The video seminars come at a time when student-athletes are navigating a new normal in the ongoing pandemic, and in-person-in-classroom discussion centered around professional career development isn't consistently available. Gainbridge and Ball State University saw this as an opportunity for Group1001 and Gainbridge President and CEO Dan Towriss, a distinguished Ball State alumnus (1994), to give back to the University by helping prepare student-athletes for professional careers beyond collegiate studies. Group1001 also has representation within Ball State through Gainbridge Field at Scheumann Stadium.
Gainbridge is a digital platform providing direct access to trusted financial products. It puts power directly into clients' hands with an offering of high-yield tax-deferred accumulation and income products designed to grow their money for goals, both big and small, not just retirement. The products Gainbridge offers provide three key benefits: steady growth, simplicity and transparency.
"Ball State empowered me with the education and experiences to grow professionally as a student-athlete," said Towriss, a former student-athlete who played baseball two years at Indiana University before completing his education at Ball State. "If I, and my company Gainbridge, can give student-athletes today the right tools, topics and opportunities to learn key professional skills before entering the workforce full-time, we can be part of their success. They already have a great disciplinary platform from which to learn as a student-athlete. We hope to contribute to their futures in this way."

The content is like what EOS uses for coaching professional athletes in basketball, hockey, track and field and volleyball. Lala recognizes the same talents in Ball State student-athletes that she sees in the professionals she works with through EOS. Facilitating learning for everyone involved by showcasing the incredible potential of athletes is a win for all involved.
Dr. Karin Lee, Ball State Senior Associate Athletics Director, said about the first webinar in this series, "Thank you to Lauryn Williams, Gainbridge and EOS for providing an outstanding financial education session for our student-athletes. It was worthwhile and we all learned what we can do with our finances and the impact. We appreciate the time that was given to inform the student-athletes in preparing for the future."
Ball State, Gainbridge and EOS see the incredible value of student-athletes and are honored to contribute to their growth and success in this continued collaboration.
