Track & Field Opens New Year at Gene Edmonds Invite

MUNCIE, Ind. - - It's been over a month since the Ball State track & field program opened the 2019-20 campaign with an impressive showing at the Mastodon Opener (Dec. 7), winning six events on the way to taking first at the 10-team meet.

The Cardinals will look to prove that was just a start to what is shaping up to be a breakout season when they return to action this weekend to begin the main stretch of the 2020 indoor campaign at the Gene Edmonds Memorial Invite hosted by Purdue at Lambert Fieldhouse.

The two-day meet is currently scheduled to get underway at 2:30 p.m. Friday beginning with the women's weight throw. Ball State will compete in four events on the opening day of the meet, which will end around 8:15 p.m. with the conclusion of the women's pentathlon.

On Saturday, the Cardinals will compete in nine more events, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with the women's shot put. Ball State's final event of the competition will be the 4x400m relay which begins at 4:35 p.m.

The first meet of the season also saw a pair of Cardinals improve their standing in the Ball State track & field record book, with both performances coming in the weight throw.

Junior Princess Carter won the weight throw at the Mastodon Opener (Dec. 7) with a career-best toss of 17.83m. It was an improvement of 0.37m over her previous career-best mark and keeps her in fourth in Ball State's record book.

Carter was not the only Cardinal to shine in the weight throw, however, as senior Megan Graves turned in a career-best mark of 17.43m to place second and move into fifth on Ball State's all-time list.

Ball State's student-athletes turned in 25 career-best performances at the Mastodon Opener. Freshman multi-event specialist Charity Griffith led the way with three career-best marks (60m hurdles, 800m, high jump), while six Cardinals notched a pair of career-best performances.
