WBB Suffers Heartbreaking Road Loss At Kent State

KENT, Ohio - In a game that saw 10 ties and 12 lead changes, the outcome was destined to be close. Unfortunately, the Cardinals fell 69-68 to Kent State in Mid-American Conference action Wednesday night at the M.A.C Center.
The last two contests between Ball State (13-7, 5-3 MAC) and Kent State (11-7, 4-3 MAC) have been decided by only four points, with the Cardinals winning both those contests. Ball State had won the first meeting this year between the Golden Flashes on Jan. 4, 66-62 in Worthen Arena. The year prior, the Cardinals earned a 48-44 victory over Kent State on Jan. 23 also in Muncie.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals had controlled the game for 20 minutes while Kent State had only held onto the lead for 12. Ball State found itself down after the first quarter but put a thrashing on the Golden Flashes in the second period, outscoring Kent State, 30-10, putting them in position to have the lead at the half.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, but the Cardinals managed to stay ahead 8-7 at the media timeout. After that, Kent State outscored Ball State 12-2 to take a 19-10 lead into the second frame of action.
Blake Smith and Jasmin Samz had back-to-back layups within a four-minute span that fueled Ball State's 16-6 run at the start of the second stanza. The Cardinals took back the lead (26-25) over Kent State by the 6:02 mark. Both teams traded baskets as the Golden Flashes tied the game 28-28 for the fifth time with 5:21 remaining in the second. The Cardinals responded with a 12-5 scoring spree that put them ahead of the home team 40-33 at intermission. In the second quarter alone, Smith and Samz combined for 17 of the Cardinals 30 points.
The Cardinals built their largest cushion of the contest after a 3-pointer from Oshlynn Brown that put Ball State up by eight (43-35) with 8:24 on the clock. Kent State rallied back though to come within one (53-52) to end the third quarter. The Golden Flashes shot 50 percent (6-12) from the field in the third frame while defensively holding Ball State to 29 percent (5-17) from the floor.
The final 10 minutes were dicey with Ball State getting into foul trouble. As both teams swapped baskets, the Cardinals led by one (61-60) at the four -minute mark off of free throws from Samz. Kent State would regain the lead but a 3-pointer from Brown knotted the game for the final time at 64-64. Kent State would hit some key shots under the basket to take the lead for the final time. Brown, in the Cardinals last efforts to tie the game, hit a layup with .01 seconds on the clock, resulting in Kent State's one-point victory.
Brown paced the Cardinals with 15 points while Samz ended the night with 14. Anna Clephane chipped in 12 and Smith finished with 10.
