Three Cardinals Score In Double Figures In WBB's Loss At Ohio
January 18, 2020 | Women's Basketball
ATHENS, Ohio - The Cardinals placed three players in double figures this afternoon, but it wasn't enough for Ball State to earn the victory over the Bobcats. Ohio (10-6, 3-2 MAC) would notch the 79-71 Mid-American Conference win over Ball State (11-6, 3-2 MAC) Saturday at the Convocation Center.
The Cardinals unfortunately couldn't stop the offensive rhythm between Ohio's Cece Hooks and Erica Johnson, as the two combined for a 46 of the Bobcats 71 points today. Ball State was plagued by its turnovers, as the Bobcats managed to score 16 points off of the Cardinals 17 miscues. Ohio also out-rebounded Ball State, 42-35. As far as shooting was concerned, both teams' stat columns were comparable to one another.
Freshman Sydney Freeman led the Cardinals in scoring with 13 points while senior Arbrie Benson became a spark off of Ball State's bench, finishing the game with 12 points. Rounding out the double-digit scoring, was junior Oshlynn Brown chipping in 11 points.
Freeman scored the first basket of the game to give the Cardinals the early 3-0 edge over the Bobcats. Ohio began to click offensively, allowing the Bobcats to go on a 12-2 run to make the score 12-5 with 5:35 left in the first quarter. Ball State then outscored Ohio 16-10 to come within one (22-21) at the one-minute mark. Puiggros and Brown combined for the last seven points that were scored for BSU to end the quarter. Ohio would take a three-point (24-21) lead over Ball State heading into the second frame.
Both teams traded baskets at the start of the second frame. A nice move underneath the basket by sophomore Blake Smith with 8:32 on the clock gave Ball State back the lead (25-24) over the Bobcats. The game was tied for the first time 32-32 after senior Jasmin Samz knocked down a 3-pointer with a little over five minutes remaining in the half. Ohio's Gabby Burris along with baskets from Johnson and Hooks propelled the Bobcats to a 10-point advantage (42-32) at the 3:32 mark. BSU came back to within single digits twice but Ohio would go up by 12 prior to the break.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals never recovered after the half. Ball State got within single digits on five occasions in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Benson's jumper at the 3:34 mark in the final frame brought the Cardinals to within eight (74-66) of the Bobcats. That would be as close as BSU would get the remainder of the contest, with the exception of Freeman's last second jumper as time expired.
The Ball State women's basketball team will return home for two game next week. The Cardinals will open their week against Buffalo on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena. After that, Ball State will host the Miami RedHawks on Saturday at 1 p.m.
