Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Play With Loss At Indiana
January 12, 2020 | Men's Tennis
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the third-straight season the Ball State men's tennis team opened its spring slate on the road at Big Ten foe Indiana. The Cardinals unfortunately fell to Hoosiers 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers took the early 1-0 advantage over the Cardinals after taking the doubles point. BSU lost at the No. 2 and No. 1 doubles positions, respectively. Freshmen Parrish Simmons and Eli Herran's match went unfinished at the No. 3 position but the score was knotted at 4-4 against Indiana's duo of Patrick Fletchall and Payam Ahmadi.
Despite the score, the Cardinals managed to take games from the Hoosiers in singles action in five of the six first sets and in all six of the second frames. Singles play was highlighted by Herran who took the second set from IU's William Piekarsky at the No. 6 slot to send the match into a third frame. Unfortunately, Herran would lose the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. On a positive note, Kovacevic returned to Ball State's lineup after missing the majority of the year in 2019 due to an injury. Kovacevic made a competitive debut at the top position against the Hoosiers Zac Brodney. Kovacevic took five games from Brodney in the first but ended up losing 7-5. He then dropped the second by 6-3 decision.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues spring play on the raod at Xavier Saturday beginning at 5 p.m.
