Cardinals in the Mix on Jam-Packed Leaderboard at Redbird Invitational

BSU seven shots back entering final round; Tounalom, Moritz in medalist hunt
Leaderboard | Final Round Pairings (Monday, 8:30 a.m. CT/9:30 ET)
Â
NORMAL, Ill. -- It should be quite a Monday at the Redbird Invitational, where virtually half the 17-team field takes championship hopes into the final round.
Â
The Ball State women's golf team is one of seven teams within seven shots of the lead after 36 holes Sunday on the season's opening day at Weibring Golf Club.
Â
Manon Tounalom threatened for an early round in the 60's, and Hadley Moritz blistered the par-5's all day long. The duo helped catapult the Cardinals to the top of the leaderboard midway through the second round.
Â
But Ball State largely finished on the more challenging front nine, which played nearly two shots tougher, and dropped a handful of shots on the way in. The Cardinals finished the day in sixth place with a two-round total of 593 (+17), seven shots off the pace set by IUPUI.
Â
Xavier, Bradley, Southern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky and tournament host Illinois State are also among the chasing pack with 18 holes left.
Â
Tounalom, who finished runner-up here a year ago, birdied three of the first six holes she played in the afternoon on the way to a 2-under par 70. She finds herself only two shots behind tournament leaders Haeri Lee of Drake and Elyse Emerzian of Bradley.
Â
Moritz is just three shots back after consecutive rounds of 73. Bolstered by a first-round eagle on the 18th hole, the BSU sophomore played the par-5's in 7 under for the day, a remarkable three shots better than anyone in the field. Were it not for Weibring's eighth hole, where she made double and triple bogeys, Moritz would likely be leading the tournament.
Â
Morgan Lewis (75-76) also provided a pair of counting rounds for Ball State on the day, while New Mexico State transfer Tiegan Taylor made her BSU debut with a 75 in the morning round.
