Kim, Moritz Carry Cardinals on Day 1 in Colorado

BSU shakes slow start, climbs to sixth place after 36 holes at Ram Classic

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Only one of the 75 golfers competing was better than Ball State's Liz Kim in the morning round Monday at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, and only three were better than teammate Hadley Moritz in the afternoon.
The pair kept the Cardinals afloat in a talented field of 13 teams. On a day when the scoring average was nearly 7 over par per round, Kim (72-75) and Moritz (76-71) finished 3 over and tied for fourth place through 36 holes at Ptarmigan Country Club.
Ball State bounced back from a slow start to climb to sixth place at day's end. Five teams competing this week are ranked among the top 100 in the country and 12 are in the top 150.
The Cardinals' fired a two-round total of 608 (+32) to end the day one shot out of fifth place. They are chasing New Mexico State (+13), tournament host Colorado State (+23), Sam Houston State (+23), Wyoming (+25) and San Francisco (+31) with 18 holes left.
Kim and Moritz are four shots behind individual leader Dominique Galloway of New Mexico State. Moritz recovered from a pair of double bogeys to open her first round by playing the day's final 34 holes in 1 under par. She and Tiegan Taylor led the Cardinals with six birdies on the day, while Kim had five.
Manon Tounalom (79-77) also provided a pair of counting rounds for Ball State, while the Cardinals counted Morgan Lewis' 79 in the morning and Taylor's 79 in the afternoon.
The tournament's third and final round will be played Tuesday, as Ball State looks to continue a trend of good finishes. BSU was third at Illinois State's Redbird Invitational and first at its own Cardinal Classic.
