Nearly Flawless Ranieri Named MAC Golfer of the Week
September 19, 2019 | Men's Golf
Sophomore finished second, led Cardinals to team title at season-opening event
MUNCIE, Ind. -- After leading Ball State to a runaway victory with the best performance of his young collegiate career, Joey Ranieri was named MAC Men's Golfer of the Week.Â
Â
Ranieri was nearly flawless over three days at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on the Donald Ross Course at Cedar Rapids Country Club. The reigning MAC Freshman of the Year made only one bogey over 54 holes, finishing tied for second with a career-best score of 209 (-7) in the first event of his sophomore season.
Â
The Zionsville, Indiana, product paced the Cardinals to a 15-stroke team victory, the program's largest margin in a decade. BSU soundly defeated 10 teams that played in NCAA Regionals last season and seven that finished the year ranked among the top 100 in the country.Â
Â
Ranieri was under par in all three rounds, including a career-best 68 to open the event. He shared the individual lead deep into the final round before Illinois State's David Perkins birdied three of his last four holes to win by three.
Â
Ranieri and the Cardinals are back action next week against another strong national field at SMU's Trinity Forest Invitational. The action begins Sunday at Trinity Forest in Dallas, site of the PGA Tour's AT&T Byron Nelson Invitational.
