MUNCIE, Ind. – Another athletic year quickly flew by for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2018-19.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top storylines of the year. We are revealing the storylines once a week throughout the summer months of June and July.
The stories are being revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue with a look back at some impressive accomplishments from the diving team.
The 2018-19 season marked a new era for Ball State swimming and diving under the leadership of rookie head coach J. Agnew. But one thing that stayed the same was the continued success of the Cardinal divers.
Agnew retained diving coach Nick Gayes who just completed his sixth season with the program. Under Gayes' leadership, the BSU divers continued racking up achievements and honors to add to an already solid legacy.
Junior Rachel Bertram led the way in 18-19 by qualifying for NCAA Zones for a third-consecutive season. At the zone competition, she placed 39th on the 3M with a score of 231.30 and 237.35 on the 1M to take 33rd. The Minnesota native also competed at USA Diving Nationals and finished eighth in the 3M qualifying with a score of 245.5 to advance to the championship round. A score of 197.55 placed her in 32nd overall.
Bertram took first place finishes against Eastern Illinois (3M), Akron (1M & 3M) and Miami (3M), all while performing well in the classroom. Bertram claimed MAC All-Academic honors and was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American.
The men had some accomplishments of their own with Hunger Ongay joining Bertram at USA Diving Nationals. Ongay scored a 195.85 on the 3M for 37th place, and his 204.00 on the 1M qualified him for the next round with a 29th place finish. The freshman went on to place 36th in the quarterfinals by notching a 205.25. Earlier in the season, Ongay was named the MAC Freshman Diver of the Year after an impressive showing at the MAC Championships.
Sean Wolfe added his name to the list of divers to win awards as he was named MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete at season's end. The sophomore earned a 3.98 GPA while studying computer science and competing for the Cardinals. Additionally, he earned a place on the MAC All-Academic squad.
All these divers and more return for the 2019-20 season, for which expectations will be high.
