Purdue Knocks Off Ball State
May 07, 2019 | Baseball
Cardinals have 6 games remaining - all at home
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue avenged an earlier loss to Ball State this season with a 9-3 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday night. The game was BSU's final midweek game of the season and now the race to the MAC Baseball Championship is on.
Ball State defeated Purdue 6-0 on March 19 but Tuesday in West Lafayette was a different story. BSU led early in the game and scored twice in the 3rd inning to tie the game 3-3 before the home team broke the game open.Â
Skyler Hunter had a 2-run single and Purdue added a couple more run-scoring hits to score 7 times between the 2nd and 4th innings. Four Purdue batter had multiple hits, including a 3-for-5 night by Hunter.Â
Ryan Peltier went 2-for-4 with a double for the Cardinals and he also pulled a home run-length foul ball to left. Justin Conant continued to swing a hot bat with a 2-for-3 effort and a walk. William Baker, Ross Messina and John Ricotta did the scoring for the Cards.Â
Conant Streak
Conant, a middle infield starter the last 8 games, has put together a 6-game hit streak. He's had 1 hit in each game, highlighted by a triple last Friday at Northern Illinois and a clutch hit in a win over Bowling Green on April 28.Â
Orselli Streak
Orselli, who is hitting .302 on the year, has started 10 games this season at designated hitter and has reached base in every game in which he's played. The freshman slugger has also driven in or scored a run in every game he's played this season.
Cardinal Is The State Bird
Ball State finished the season with a 9-3 record vs. in-state opponents. That mark includes a pair of wins over Notre Dame and the earlier 6-0 win over Purdue in Muncie. BSU also beat Butler and Valparaiso and Purdue Fort Wayne twice.
Ball State (30-17) hosts Ohio this weekend with the first game set for Friday at 3 p.m. Drey Jameson will start for the Cardinals, who are in 2nd place and 1 game behind Central Michigan in the league standings.Â
