Jameson on pace to set pair of school strikeout records this season
Opposing batters facing Ball State this season have learned the path from home plate back to the dugout. Cardinals pitchers - led by several power arms - are enjoying a record season in strikeouts. As a team, Ball State leads the nation with 11.21 strikeouts per 9 innings.
Drey Jameson is among the nation's leading strikeout artists. The sophomore right-hander now has 120 punchouts after getting a career-high 16 on Friday at Northern Illinois. Here's where Jameson ranks in both the MAC and in all of NCAA Division I when it comes to sending opponents to the bench:
Â
Jameson set the school record for strikeouts per 9 innings last year with a 12.12 mark. He's obliterating that this year, and only a few pitchers in the entire nation are striking out batters more efficiently. The single-season Ball State record for strikeouts is 139, set by Brian Bullington in 2002. Bullington was the No. 1 pick of the 2002 MLB Draft.Â
John Baker, a junior righty, has climbed to the No. 3 spot on Ball State's all-time strikeouts list with 249. While he only has one double-digit strikeout game and missed the first few weekends of the season, Baker still stands 5th in the MAC with 69 strikeouts. Baker has only allowed more than 2 earned runs once all season and boasts a conference-best 1.80 ERA.
Another power arm, Kyle Nicolas, is 4th in the MAC with 70 strikeouts. He owns a mark of 13.79 strikeouts per 9 innings that would be just behind Jameson in the school record book. Nicolas, who emerged as a closer this season and is also starting on Sundays, owns 6 saves and is holding opponents to a .170 batting average.
Ball State (30-16, 14-5 MAC) has games remaining - all at home - in the regular season. BSU, currently 2nd in the MAC standings, hosts Ohio May 10-12 and Toledo May 16-18.
