Softball’s Season Ends with Loss to Kent State
May 10, 2019 | Softball
AKRON, Ohio - - In another tough Mid-American Conference Softball Championship showdown, the Ball State softball team saw its 2019 season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Kent State Friday morning at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
After suffering a hard-fought 3-2 (8) loss to the defending tournament champion and third-seeded Ohio in Wednesday's tournament opener, the sixth-seeded Cardinals (34-20) drew another tough match-up in its first elimination game, facing the second-seeded Golden Flashes (26-23).
Kent State got off to an early start in the game, which started Thursday night, scoring three first inning runs. With the reigning MAC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year Andrea Scali in the circle for KSU, the hosts on the scoreboard were able to retire the first seven Ball State batters before heavy rain forced the game to by halted after 52 minutes Thursday night.
Back on the field Friday morning following a 14-hour and 11-minute delay, the Golden Flashes were able to extended their lead to 4-0 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Cue junior slugger Janae Hogg who would spoil what was a KSU perfect game up until that point with a first pitch leadoff home run in the top of the fifth inning. It was Hogg's 10th home run of the season, which helped her become only the fourth player in program history to hit 10-or-more home runs in at least two seasons.
Hogg's blast would momentarily rattle Scali, who ended up hitting sophomore designated player Kendall Fields in the next at bat, before surrendering a one-out double to junior left fielder Kennedy Wynn.
Unfortunately, Scali was able to recover and strand both runners on her way to retiring Ball State's final eight batters in order.
In the circle, freshman starter Tieghan Morio turned in a strong effort for the Cardinals, recovering from a rough first inning to limit Kent State to just four hits and one unearned run over her final five innings of work. She also struck out four batters in the game.
With the loss, the Ball State softball team closed the 2019 season with a 34-20 overall record. The 34 wins tie as the seventh-most in a season in program history.
