Cardinals can even series Saturday afternoon
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - All winning streaks come to an end. The Ball State baseball team can now start a new one after dropping a 5-4 game at Central Michigan on Friday.
The Cardinals (4-1 in MAC play) rallied late in the game but ran out of outs as CMU (6-1) held on. Ball State, which hadn't lost since March 15, nearly tied the game with 3 runs in the 7th inning after falling behind 5-1. Noah Powell worked a bases-loaded walk to make the score 5-2. After a CMU pitching change, Tim Blankenberger and Aaron Simpson each smacked a sac fly to make it a 1-run game.Â
"We did a nice job battling back," head coach Rich Maloney. "I liked that we fought back, we just ran out of outs. I loved our double play in the 8th that gave us a chance. We made some plays but they just made a little more than we did."
Ball State (19-10 overall) put the go-ahead run on 1st base in the top of the 9th but fell short.Â
Noah Navarro had a pair of hits and Chase Sebby scored twice to lead Ball State.Â
CMU's Pat Leatherman earned the win, working 6 innings and allowing just the one unearned run. He yielded just 2 hits and fanned 4 Cardinals. Cameron Miller earned a save.
Ball State can even the series Saturday when it takes on CMU at 1 p.m. ET. Fans can follow the Cards on Twitter or Instagram at @BallStateBB.
