Softball Suffers 4-1 Setback in Series Opener versus BGSU
April 05, 2019 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind.- - Thanks to a two-out, first-inning RBI double from freshman second baseman Amaia Daniel, the Ball State softball team struck first in Friday's Mid-American Conference series opener versus Bowling Green at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
Unfortunately, the Cardinals (26-12; 4-2 MAC) could not hold onto the lead as the Falcons (14-19; 2-6 MAC) struck for four runs in the top of the second and held on for a 4-1 victory.
Â
Ball State rallied behind a couple solid defensive plays in the top of the first inning, as senior catcher Olivia Huffman threw out a runner trying to steal for the second out, while junior outfielder Haley Dominique made a great catch in left field to end the inning.
Â
Dominique then opened the bottom of the inning with a walk, and after she stole second, came around to score the game's first run on Daniel's two-out RBI double.
Â
Unfortunately, BGSU was able to capitalize on a hit batter and a Ball State error early in the top of the second, and went on to score four runs, only three of which were earned, in the frame to pull ahead for good.
Â
That proved to be all the run support the Falcons' starting pitcher Meredith Miller needed as she limited the Cardinals to just one more hit, a two-out pinch hit double off the wall in the bottom of the seventh by junior slugger Janae Hogg.
Â
Despite a solid performance of her own in the circle, striking out seven and limiting BGSU to three hits and one earned run, freshman Sarah Venker suffered the loss for the Cardinals to fall to 12-3 on the year.
Â
While she did not get a hit, freshman center fielder Kim Manuel had a strong game, drawing walks in both of her plate appearances. She also stole her 15th base of the season in her 15th attempt.
Â
The Ball State softball team will look to rebound Saturday, when it hosts Bowling Green for a 1 p.m. doubleheader back at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
