Quinn served the past 24 years in administration after 13 seasons as baseball coach
MUNCIE, Ind. – Pat Quinn is retiring from Ball State University at the end of June after a multi-faceted, 37-year career featuring more than 300 wins as the Cardinals' head baseball coach and nearly a quarter century of dedicated service as an administrator.
Quinn, 73, who hung up his cleats as the winningest baseball coach in school history in 1995, has since provided an experienced, conscientious voice to six athletic directors. He has served as deputy AD since 2014.
In his 24 years as an administrator, Quinn supervised virtually every Ball State sport at one time or another. He oversaw facilities and game operations for the past 17 years and supervised the equipment area for part of that time. He added the duties of Ball State's compliance director in 2008 and led that department for the remainder of his tenure.
"On behalf of the Ball State Athletics Department, we wish PQ nothing but the best in his well-deserved retirement," Ball State AD Beth Goetz said. "His service and dedication to the University, fellow staff members and student-athletes is unmatched. He truly embodies what it means to be a Ball State Cardinal."
Quinn came to Muncie before the 1983 baseball season, ushering in a power-hitting era at Ball State. The former Reds bullpen catcher took over a team fresh off three straight losing seasons and led the Cardinals to a .500 record his first year and then three straight winning campaigns. He coached 34 future pros, including the likes of 1986 MAC Player of the Year and first-team All-American Thomas Howard who went on to an 11-year major league career.
Quinn retired from coaching after 13 seasons and 323 victories at BSU. The Xavier graduate also won more than 300 games as a high school coach. But more than the wins and losses, the Muncie Star's Randy Benson wrote upon his coaching retirement, "Integrity and honesty were the trademarks of Quinn's years at Ball State."
Quinn brought those same values to the administrative side, jumping right in following the '95 season as assistant athletics director in Ball State's newly combined men's and women's athletics department under AD Andrea Seger. He was elevated to associate AD under Bubba Cunningham in 2003 and eventually deputy AD under Bill Scholl in 2014.
Quinn has been married to the former Christine Klump for 47 years. The couple has four children – Jeff, Dan, Holly and Tony – and seven grandchildren.
