Event shortened to 36 holes, Cardinals enter final round ninth
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There was cold. There was rain. There was wind. And in the end, there was just one round played Friday on the opening day of the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate.
Â
The conditions made the already challenging Scarlet Course at Ohio State University Golf Club even tougher. The average score for the field was 77.90, nearly seven strokes over par. For comparison, the average over the three rounds at last year's Kepler was 74.92.
Â
There will only be two rounds this year. Friday's second round was scrapped after only a few holes when things became unplayable. The teams will play 18 more holes Saturday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start to wrap up the event.
Â
Ball State turned in easily its highest round of the season Friday with a 313 (+29) yet still finds itself near the middle of the pack, tied for ninth out of 15 teams. Keegan Bronnenberg led the way with a 76, good for 22nd among the 77 golfers competing. The Cardinals also counted rounds of 77 from Timothy Wiseman, 79 from CJ Jones and 81 from Tyler Green.
Â
A trio of Big Ten teams leads the way entering the final round. Michigan State (+10) had the low round of the day to edge host Ohio State by one. Penn State is seven back. Ohio State's Daniel Wetterich shot one of only three scores in red figures and leads the medalist race after a 69.
Â
Ball State will tee off on holes 7-10 Saturday, grouped with Maryland and Northern Illinois.
