Joey Ranieri continues hot play with first-round 68 to lead early BSU charge
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team was in the hunt at even par through 18 holes Saturday but fell back in the afternoon round against strong competition at the Boilermaker Invitational.
The Cardinals will enter Sunday's final round 11th in the field of 15 teams at 585 (+9) through 36 holes at Purdue's Kampen Course. The four teams behind the Cardinals are MAC opponents Kent State, Miami and Northern Illinois and in-state foe Indiana.
The top three teams on the leaderboard are separated by just two shots, with Illinois State (-16) holding a slim edge over the host Boilermakers (-15) and fifth-ranked Oklahoma (-14). Every team in the field is ranked among the top 140 in the country by Golfstat.
Joey Ranieri led the morning charge for Ball State with a career-best 4-under par 68 for his third straight round in the 60's. Ranieri was just one shot off the lead after the opening round before dropping back with a 75 in the afternoon. Still, the freshman is the top BSU player on the leaderboard in a tie for 22nd at 1 under par.
Wisconsin's Jordan Hahn is 9 under and holds a two-shot lead in the race for medalist.
Timothy Wiseman was even after his morning round but carded a 76 in the afternoon. He and CJ Jones are both 4 over, while Keegan Bronnenberg is 5 over. Yianni Kostouros bounced back from an opening 81 to lead Ball State in the afternoon with a 73.
