Dis Agustsdottir's 3-Pointer Lifts WBB Past NIU, 67-64
March 06, 2019 | Women's Basketball
DEKALB, Ill. – Thelma Dis Agustsdottir nailed a 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left to give Ball State(8-21, 3-13 MAC) a 67-64 victory at Northern Illinois (17-12, 9-8 MAC) Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
With only two games remaining for both teams in the MAC regular season, you would expect nothing less than NIU's senior day to make it a last minute ball game. The Huskies made a strong comeback in the final stanza and would take a 64-62 lead with 54 seconds left in the contest. But Ball State wasn't going to let this contest go, they could smell blood, and they got it. A layup by sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown knotted the contest 64-64, but she missed the free throw, giving NIU back possession. Senior guard Jasmin Samz stole the ball from the Huskies and gave Dis Augustsdottir the opportunity to nail the game winner.
The Cardinals took charge in the first quarter of the ball game against the Huskies, outscoring Northern Illinois 22-9 to take a 13-point advantage at the end of the first period. Samz ended the first stanza with a 3-pointer as time expired. The Cardinals also shot a staggering 52 percent (9-of-17) while defensively holding NIU to only 20 percent from the field (3-of-15).
Ball State opened the second frame with a 10-7 run to take its largest lead of the half, 32-16, which was capped off by back-to-back baskets from Samz. Then NIU started to throw some punches back, scoring 12 unanswered points to come within four (32-28) of the Cardinals at intermission.
Northern Illinois though continued to chip at the Cardinals heels in the third frame, outscoring Ball State 17-to-14 to make it a one-point contest at the conclusion of the third frame.
The Cardinals placed three players in double figures with sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass leading the way with 19 points while Samz finished the night with 18. Brown collected her 17th double-double of her career with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
